Notes:
The onset of World War II caused great strain on coin production at the Melbourne Mint. In 1940, the Perth Mint was asked to produce £8,000 of pennies and £4,000 of halfpennies. Melbourne marked the dies sent to Perth with a small dot, which is found between the initials of Kruger Gray, the designer of the reverse die i.e. 'K.G'. The placement of the dot is generally consistent for this issue but a variety does exist with a dot placed well below the 'K.G' initials. This is more than likely a Melbourne-minted coin struck when that Mint was experimenting with the placement of the mint mark. Although it has long been dismissed as "not a real K.G Penny" by some numismatists it does appear to be a mint-generated variety and as such should be included in any catalogue of Australian coins. It is probably the product of one reverse die, which would give it a mintage of perhaps 50,000 coins, therefore being much rarer than the actual Perth-struck 'K.G' Penny.
