Notes:
The Melbourne-minted 1952 Penny is struck on a Type D reverse first used on the 1938 penny and is the same type used on the early strikes of the 1952 Perth penny. However, the '5' in the date of the Melbourne coin displays a serif on the cross bar which is not on either of the London derived reverses used by Perth. This confirms that the serifed '5' punch first used in 1945 and last used on the 1953 Melbourne Penny was a Melbourne Mint invention. W.J. Mullet a senior officer at the Melbourne Mint records 36,415,200 coins were struck in this year against an oft published mintage of 21,240,000. In the Benchmark Catalogue we have theorised that usable dies were re-deployed by the Melbourne Mint in the immediate years prior to Australia's changeover to Decimal Currency in 1966. This would account for the large number of coins of this date that are found randomly in late date coin hoards.
