Notes:
The majority of the 1953 Melbourne pennies were struck with a Type D reverse which is readily identified by a serif on the '5' and the lack of a mint mark, but a small number of Melbourne pennies were struck sans serif (without a serif) ie a straight cross-bar on the '5' in the date. This was the result of the Melbourne Mint experimenting with its version of the new Type F reverse which it finally came to adopt in 1955.
