Notes:
In 1953, the Melbourne and Perth mints produced large mintages i.e. 6,833,600 and 6,202,800 respectively to introduce the new monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. Controversially, 'F:D', i.e. 'Defender of the Faith', had been omitted from the Queen's titles and after much wringing of hands this was restored on the pennies issued in 1955. The obverse masters supplied to Melbourne and Perth have diamond shaped stops in the legends but it is evident that each mint added their own edge beading, as the Melbourne count of 116 denticles differs slightly from the Perth count of 117. This marks the first time that the Perth Mint 'created' its own master die by diverging from the precedent established by London or its proxy the Melbourne Mint. The reverse of the Perth coin is immediately identifiable by the plain '5' in the date and a '•' after the last 'A' of 'AUSTRALIA', a mint mark first used in 1952.
