Notes:
The Perth Mint had struck over 11 million circulation pennies in 1955 before it elected to strike its first proof coins for the collector public. These circulation coins included both closed ‘55’s and wide ‘5 5’s varieties in the dates which were combined with a new modified obverse type supplied by the Melbourne Mint. The Perth Mint had also been experimenting with die production and as testament to its new die-making skills struck 1955 proof coins with its own modified obverse on a reverse die with closed ‘55’s in the date. Just 301 proof coins were produced with this combination and no coins were struck for circulation. However, the Perth Mint did strike a very small number of coins with its new modified obverse on the reverse with wide ‘5 5’s. This late production run may have been as few as 20,000 – 30,000 coins as they seldom turn up and not often in good grade.
